What is Magnesium Nitride?

Magnesium Nitride is an inorganic compound having the chemical formula Mg3N2. It's part of the cubic crystals system. At the temperature of room, pure magnesium nitride is a yellow-green powder however, magnesium nitride that contains some magnesium oxide impurities is grayish white.

The Molar mass of magnesium nitride is 100.95g/mol. Their density stands at 2.712g/cm3. Magnesium nitride dissolves completely in acid and water, but is partially dissolvable when mixed with alcohol and ether.

The melting point of magnesium nitride ranges from 1500 to 1500 degrees. Magnesium Nitride, as with many metal nitrides, reacts with water to produce ammonia. It is frequently used as a catalyst. React with acid and aqueous nonmetallic oxides , forming ammonium salts as well as magnesium salts.

Magnesium Nitride is a clay-like substance found in nature. Magnesium nitride is highly resistant to corrosion resistance and greatly improves productivity. Magnesium has high thermal conductivity, aswell being highly resistant to corrosion as well as temperature resistance. Magnesium Nitride is of additional importance because it is used as a catalyst for the formation of boron.

What is Magnesium Nitride Used For?

How to Make Magnesium Nitride?

The main preparation methods of magnesium nitride include direct reaction method for magnesium powder using nitrogen, the reaction method of carbon with nitrogen in nitrogen plasma flow in the form of a magnesium coil explosion in nitrogen atmosphere and low pressure chemical gas as a complementary product method, self propagating high temperature process for synthesis, nano-magnesium nitride synthesis methods and more.

Recently, G. Soto et al. constructed amorphous magnesium nutride films with different ratios of Mg:N on Si substrates within a molecular-nitrogen environment using an application of pulsed lasers. These methods restrict their industrial application due to costs, lengthy processes complicated equipment operation or low yield of magnesium nitride.

Although the direct reaction between magnesium powder and nitrogen has industrial significance, the manufacturing of magnesium nitride powder requires higher temperature for the reaction and a long response time. In addition, the particle's shape is not perfect and easy to agglomerate which doesn't meet needs of industrial grade. The NH3 is decomposed into Nand N2 - with broken bonds much more quickly than N2 and H2 decomposed may block the formation of MgO. As such, ammonia gas could be utilized as a nitrogen source. Chen Faqin et al. employed liquid ammonia as a nitrogen source for the preparation of magnesium nitride by direct nitriding of magnesium powder. The following conclusions can be drawn: Through thermodynamic analysis, liquid ammonia can react with magnesium powder much more quickly than nitrogen to make magnesium nitride. magnesium nitride in homogeneous and pure powder particles can be made at 600 and ammonia pressure for 1h, after which it is heated to 800degrees, with an ammonia flow rate of 500ml/min , and an nitriding duration of 1h.
