Researchers turned pulverized coal into graphite in a microwave oven
Using copper foil, glass containers, and a traditional home microwave oven, researchers at the University of Wyoming demonstrated that pulverized coal can be converted into high-value nano graphite.
Although previous studies have shown that microwaves can be used to reduce the moisture content of coal and remove sulfur and other minerals, most of these methods require specific chemical pretreatment of the coal. In their experiment, the University of Washington researchers simply ground raw coal from the Powder River Basin into powder.
The powder is then placed on copper foil, sealed in a glass container with a gas mixture of argon and hydrogen, and placed in a microwave oven. A traditional microwave was chosen for convenience, as it provided the required radiation levels.
"By cutting the copper foil into forks, microwave radiation sets off sparks that generate temperatures of more than 1,800 degrees Fahrenheit in a matter of seconds," said Masi, lead author of the paper. "This is why you should never put a metal fork in the microwave."
Microwave-generated sparks create the high temperatures needed to convert pulverized coal into polycrystalline ink, a process that also involves copper foil and hydrogen.
The microwave time in the experiment was 3-45 minutes, and the best microwave time was 15 minutes.
The researchers say this new method of coal conversion could be improved and carried out on a larger scale to produce nano graphite materials of higher quality and quantity.
